Trump Declares National Emergency in Washington DC Over Intense ICE Dispute, Sparks Major Political Showdown

Trump Declares National Emergency: Following Mayor Muriel Bowser’s declaration that the city’s police would not work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he would declare a national emergency and federalize Washington, D.C.

Information on those who are unlawfully residing in or entering the United States is at issue. With almost 2,000 soldiers monitoring the city, Trump’s warning complements a move criticized as government overreach.

The remarks follow thousands of demonstrators who took to the streets this month in protest of Trump’s August National Guard military deployment to “re-establish law, order, and public safety,” after he referred to crime as a “blight on the capital.”
“In a few of weeks. Trump said on Truth Social that the “place” is prospering and that there is almost no crime for the first time in decades.

A request for response to Trump’s tweet was not immediately answered by Bowser’s office.
He previously dispatched federal law enforcement, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, to patrol the streets and placed the metropolitan police department under direct federal authority. When their mission will conclude is unknown.

Bowser was under pressure from “Radical Left Democrats” to tell the government about his failure to cooperate with ICE, and Trump said that if the police stopped working with ICE, “Crime would come roaring back.”

“Don’t worry, I’m with you, and I won’t let this happen,” he said, addressing the companies and citizens of Washington, D.C. If necessary, I’ll Federalize and declare a National Emergency.
In addition to signing an order for the city to work with federal law enforcement, Bowser, who has previously hailed Trump’s surge of federal law enforcement and brought about a dramatic drop in crime, opens a new tab.
Unless summoned into federal duty, the National Guard functions as a militia that reports to the governors of the 50 states. The president receives direct reports from the D.C. National Guard.
